There are some drawbacks which you should take into account before you embark on a DIY plumbing project. Some situations would require those who opt for DIY to have specific licenses, otherwise plumbing jobs by non-experts are prohibited. Serious plumbing problems would need more than just a DIY hand to do the job.

It sounds like you either did not remove or did not fully remove the plug that's in the pipe connecting to the dishwasher drain line. New disposals come with a plastic plug inside the dishwasher drain connection that must be removed (typically with a screwdriver and a hammer) and then you need to actually take the plastic plug out of the disposal (ensuring it's fully removed from the pipe connection, too).

We installed a new garbage disposer, which works fine. However, now when the dishwasher is run, water sprays up out of the sink drains. What's wrong?
