Changing Your Twitter Name
Welcome to The Real Tim Jones. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or for more frequent, informal updates, you can follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!
Recently, I changed my Twitter user name from Timothy_Jones to TheRealTimJones. I did this to continue to establish and build my brand at “The Real Tim Jones.” I’ve had several people tell me, “I can’t find you on Twitter — I searched for The Real Tim Jones and just Tim Jones, but Timothy Jones never occurred to me.”
To change my name, I just went into the “Settings” tab on Twitter.com and changed the username field.
You don’t want it to be difficult for people to find you online, if you’re trying to do business, online. So, I changed the user name. The funny part is, I forgot how many different places I needed to change my Twitter name. So, if you’re planning to change your Twitter name, Google account, YouTube account, etc., don’t forget to change it in these places, too.
- Business cards — handed out about a hundred of these at BlogWorld and didn’t realize until the end that I had the wrong Twitter name on them
- Widgets — that one, over there, in the right sidebar, yeah, that’s the one — changed it
- TwitPic — couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting any response to TwitPic’s I was posting. Maybe because they were posting to a now invalid account. Fail.
- Profile pages — Facebook, YouTube, Google, Squidoo, etc.
- Ninja links (like I use for all my profiles to add branding and ease to links)
Don’t forget to change all these important places when you change your Twitter name (like I did…).
