IZEAFest Opening Keynote by Craig Murphy?

By Tim_Jones On October 2, 2009 Under Blogging, Conferences, Featured, Social Media

Welcome to The Real Tim Jones. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or for more frequent, informal updates, you can follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!

Ted Murphy’s keynote started off with a fantastic spoofing of himself (video, below), followed by fantastic content in his presentation.

Ted focused on five primary points in his presentation.

  • Promise
  • Identity
  • Contribution
  • Promotion
  • Monetization

I won’t bore you with all the details (even though I wasn’t bored for a single second during the presentation), but I’ll give you a few of my take-aways.

  • What words come to mind when you want to describe your personal brand?  Keywords provide the framework for your brand
  • USE PROFESSIONALS! — you cannot take a professional photo of yourself, just because you own Photoshop, doesn’t mean you can design anything, and avoid a standard blog template
  • Be the embodiment of your brand — are you quiet online?  Be quiet, offline.  Are you a jerk, online?  Be an even bigger jerk, offline.  Either way, keep it consistent.
  • Contribute!  Give back!  This will help people learn who you are, what you love and care about and you will become associated with that cause and help others in the process!
  • View your personal brand as a business!
  • You must C0-Or-Di-Nate!  — Your brand must reach across all platforms — if I’m “The Real Tim Jones” here, then I need to be “The Real Tim Jones” everywhere.  (This could mean a lot of work with changing over Google accounts and so on, but it really needs to be done).
  • Do something! — swag, speak, attend events — Differentiate yourself!

Now, for the best part of the keynote!

"The Real Tim Jones" is a great and memorable brand, I love it. Tim Jones is slightly more generic sounding :)
  • Thanks, Jay! I appreciate input from someone with your expertise! I agree, Tim Jones is generic -- and that was something Ted actually mentioned in his presentation -- "if your name is John Doe" (or Tim Jones, in my case :) ), "then you should probably use a persona."

The work involved could be monumental, but I think it will be worth it in the long run.
