Chris Brogan Keynote - Affiliate Summit East 2009

By Tim_Jones On August 10, 2009 Under Affiliate Marketing, Conferences, Featured

Welcome back!

In classic Chris Brogan fashion, the speaker performs his own sound check and gives the crowd a little warm-up.

“I’m not going to teach you how to Tweet” — Chris Brogan

What Chris did teach was about Trust Agents and how to become one.

  • Make your own game - stand out from the crowd
  • One of us - belonging
  • Archimedes effect - leverage
  • Agent Zero - developing access
  • Human artist - developing understanding
  • Build an army

Chris also brought his co-author, Julien Smith, on stage to add to the presentation.  This produced a unique dynamic to a keynote speech.  I really felt like I was watching a skit or play, rather than a keynote “speech.”  Julien brought a unique perspective to the presentation and almost stole the show from Chris.

Make Your Own Game

Chris and Julien gave three examples of people that changed the game to match their needs, thereby becoming the experts within their newly created meme.

  • Tim Ferriss - Lifestyle Design: not just time-management or self-help — Lifestyle Design
  • Malcom Gladwell - Tipping Point
  • Chris Anderson - Long-Tail

These people created entirely new words that have become everyday parts of at least the “geek” vocabulary, as well as general vocabulary.  Through this creation, they have become “Trust Agents.”

One of Us

“We’re cold-calling people.” — Chris Brogan

We are, as affiliate marketers, cold-calling our leads/prospects.  So, how do we “warm” that call?  By becoming one of “them.”  By belonging, you carry more authority and trust.

  • Awareness
  • Reputation
  • Trust

Key for affiliate marketing is to get to the inside.  Once you’ve gotten in, you become the default person.  Insider vocabulary helps get you “inside”.”  Each group has their own vocabulary — if you know and understand the vocabulary, you move closer.

Agent Zero

Agent zero — that person that is good and likes to connect people to people — a connector.  An “agent zero” will connect with every group — famous and average “joes.”  They used Gary V as an example of an agent zero.

In my opinion, you must be very clear about what you want and have a definite purpose to become an agent zero.  Otherwise, you’ll just be floating in the wind with no direction and your actions will meet with varying results.

A great presentation by Chris and Julien and I look forward to reading Trust Agents.

  • Hey Tim -

Thanks for the recap - I was running around and missed part of it. We were live streaming it, but had some problems with the audio. But we'll have a higher quality version soon with good audio.

Great to see you in NYC.
