YouTube Service FAIL

By Tim_Jones On April 8, 2009 Under Affiliate Marketing, Featured, Video

Welcome back!

Recently, YouTube seems to be experiencing some problems. Whether it’s inaccurate view counts, ultra-long processing times for high-quality videos, or various YouTube errors with the actual video (pixelating and so on), something is not going right at YouTube.

However, if you’re doing anything with video marketing and content generation, you should be doing much more with your video than just to “YouTube it.” “But, it takes too long to upload to all the different video sharing sites.”

I can hear the whining, now. :)

Fortunately, you don’t have to submit your videos to each individual site — you can use TubeMogul.com. I’m always surprised how many people are not familiar with TubeMogul.

TubeMogul supports many of the video sharing sites, including some of the most popular sites, as shown, below.

TubeMogul also includes many analytical tools with your free membership to the site. These tools tell you at a glance how many views and embeds your video gets on the various video sharing sites. With the tools TubeMogul offers, you get:

  • One-stop shop for uploading videos to all the major video sharing sites
  • Trends and buzz spotting with the analytical tools
  • Increased reach for your advertising/marketing message
  • Ability to assess your marketing strategy based on viewer-ship location and sites

TubeMogul does have some down sides, but keep in mind the service is free. There are many software packages that offer similar services for $20-40/month.

Minuses:

  • You are limited to 100 video uploads per month (each site on which you “launch” a video is counted as one of your uploads).
  • Many of the video sharing sites require separate permissions for TubeMogul to allow you to upload a video. I’m still having difficulty getting Viddler approved with TubeMogul, even though I’ve uploaded lots of videos directly to Viddler.
  • You’re limited to a 300MB maximum upload size, even for sites that allow bigger video files

You can pay for a premium account to get more uploads per month and bigger upload sizes, but unless you’re doing a video every day, you’ll probably be OK with the free membership.

If you’re following the “YouTube it” marketing philosophy for your video marketing campaigns, you’re missing a big chunk of traffic, which could mean you’re losing a big chunk of $$$$ money.

    Here a couple quick thoughts:

    - You can't manage 20-30 video sharing sites and get solid viewership
    - "Syndication" is at it's best when it's controlled, monitored, analyzed and promoted
    - 25% of the sites on TubeMogul error half of the time while uploading
    - 100 uploads at 1 video a day for 10 sites adds up very quickly, thus killing the whole idea of mass syndicating
    - The cost for more uploads is more than you want to know or spend
    - There is a reason why "YouTube" and "Google" are as well known and widely used as they are.
    - Viddler and Vimeo are nice, but you'll never get organic traffic through them.

We can chat more, those are a few thoughts from a newbie at video creation and syndication.
  • Thanks for the feedback, Jason. I know you've experienced a fair number of the problems with YouTube, recently...especially, making a new video, everyday.

I agree that video syndication is not perfected, yet, but TubeMogul offers a great free option to get your videos out to a lot of sites. I'm not seeing it as a replacement for YouTube -- they're still the king of the video world and you can't ignore them, but I get enough views on the "lower-tier" sites for my videos, that I can't afford to ignore them.

You definitely can't use TubeMogul as a daily video blogger, unless you are making some serious cash to compensate for the cost of premium memberships. It should be used for your best offers or videos that you really need to promote, heavily across as many platforms as possible.

I don't try to manage 20 to 30, since only about 5-10 actually apply to my video (they have a lot of DIY video sites and some "dating" video sites, etc.). For this, I've found TubeMogul's analytics to be sufficient, for now.

You are in a different class of video producer, altogether. This was really aimed at people putting together a few videos per month vs. your 1-2 per day. :)
  • I use TubeMogul, but usually upload individually to YouTube.

The reason is that I was noticing that my videos were taking a while to hit the other video sites after I completed the process on TubeMogul.

For instance, I uploaded some videos on Monday and just got the confirmation from TubeMogul today.

Maybe it's Revver holding them up, because I got confirmations from them for all of the videos around the same take.

Oddly, of the videos I posted, all but one were refused by Revver on the grounds of "hateful content" - they were videos for things like a weekly update for Affiliate Summit and Mobile Marketing for Affiliates.
  • Must be Revver -- it's one of the few I don't upload to on TubeMogul and all mine go right through, every time.

The "hateful content" deal is pretty interesting. I guess they thought you were taking jabs at those with weight issues. Don't worry, you'll be past yours, shortly. :) BTW, I lost a pound and a half while you were adding on a pound. :)
  • You don't upload to Revver, because they won't take your hater content - it's cool, the acai magic will catch up to you.
  • I think, they are trying to modify or solve the problem.
