Obama’s Inauguration

By Tim_Jones On January 20, 2009 Under Personal Development, politics

Welcome back!

Today, the 44th president of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama, will be sworn in.  President Obama has inspired many in the US to have hope for the future and looking for change in the new administration.

I would challenge all of you to look inward for this hope and change, rather than to your President, your government, your neighbor, or family.  The only person that can affect your life is YOU!

Ultimately, all of the external forces and people cannot change your situation — you must take the iniative, yourself.  The sooner you take responsibility for your own life condition, the sooner you can start changing it.  Stop the excuses.  Stop blaming someone or something else.  Get off your butt and find a way.

“How do I do that?” you might ask.  Here are a few tips:

Get Out and Stay Out of Debt

Debt creates a prison-like existence that eliminates your freedom of choice.  You can’t leave a job you hate to start a new career or business, because your trapped by that next car payment or credit card bill.  Your wife may not be able to stay home with the kids, because you’re already being crushed by the immense pressure of your debt-load with two incomes.  Debt forces you to make bad decisions and complicates your life, especially when the economy turns sour.

Wouldn’t life be so much more enjoyable if you didn’t have to worry about where you were going to get that next car payment?  Wouldn’t it be nice to have some savings and no payments when you get laid-off or “let go” due to economic conditions?  Don’t participate in the economic down-turn.  Make yourself impervious to the external economies and “recession-proof” your life.

PS: One of the best books on this subject is Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover.  If you have financial troubles or need some money-management advice, buy this book, today!  Dave’s been on the New York Times bestseller list for over 70 weeks, he has a nationally syndicated talk radio show, and his own show on the Fox Business Channel.

Get A Second Job

Yes, get a second job…or even a third one.  Additionally, you could start earning a living doing something you love — start that business you’ve been thinking about, turn that hobby into a business, start the blog you’ve always wanted, take steps toward fulfilling that dream you’ve always had to own a plane, live on a boat, hike the Appalachian trail, whatever!

If you’re working so much on creating an income and developing your dreams and gettting out of debt, you won’t have time to worry about all the woes of the world.  Watching the news will take a back seat to your part-time pizza delivery job.

Get Outside

Instead of sitting in front of your time-sucking, Japanese crack television catching up on the latest episode of American Idol, get outside!  Even if you’re just sitting in your yard, drinking a beer, at least your not living vicariously through your favorite character on Grey’s Anatomy or deepening your depression watching the news.  Go for a walk, ride your bike, take your kids to the park, whatever gets you moving!  Not only will this separation from “The Matrix” give your brain a chance to recharge and relax, you’ll think more clearly, come up with ideas that will supercharge your work and business, and re-new your own vitality.  Every so often, you need to disconnect, get some fresh air, and gain a new perspective.

If you maintain the current status-quo perspective that our new President will save you from all your woes, you’ll be a long time waiting.  No one, not even Barack Obama can solve your problems.  Only YOU can fix YOU!

  • Good advice, Tim. I especially liked the part about getting out of debt. Debt is so enslaving as we are seeing so much these days.
  • Thanks, Mike. I could not agree with you, more. We've been out of debt for about 3 years and it is very liberating. I just wish some of our politicians would learn the value of reduced debt. I won't hold my breath for that one.
