WordPress Version 2.6 Released: Gears Support, Post Revision Restore, and Press This Option

By Tim_Jones On July 15, 2008 Under Blogging

Welcome to The Real Tim Jones. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or for more frequent, informal updates, you can follow me on Twitter. Thanks for visiting!

WordPress released version 2.6 of the self-hosted WordPress blogging software. I upgraded this blog using the Automatic Upgrade plug-in with marginal results. The plugin hung on the reactivation of all my plugins, so I had to go back in and manually re-activate them all. Other than this one glitch, everything seems to be working fine. Let me know if you notice otherwise.

WordPress now includes Gears support, so you can work off-line on your posts. Additionally, you can go back to previous revisions of your posts, the dashboard looks slightly different, and there is a new “press this” option to include links to articles, images, etc. that you find while browsing the internets. I haven’t had much time to use the new version, so I’ve included WordPress’ video description of the changes, for anyone that’s interested.

Hi there. The Gears support in WordPress 2.6 isn't for offline authoring of posts; its a performance improvement so that the editor and admin interface will load much faster when you are on slower networks.

  • Thanks for the clarification, I must have mis-heard that part of the video while I was also typing the post. :)
  • I made the mistake of upgrading right away without checking if my key plugins were compatible.

Turns out Podpress (for streaming and providing reporting for podcasts) doesn't work with it.

    Ugh.
